What determines thread performance

Micro Core Technology®

MCT® uses microfilaments to create an even thread surface. Mara is made from polyester; elastic Maraflex uses polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

Continuous filaments

These threads combine continuous individual filaments. Tera and Filan use this construction for smoothness and strength; fine Skala is intended for discreet stitching.

Bonding

Bonding helps keep the thread components together during sewing. Zwibond is internally bonded and Solbond externally bonded; their materials and intended applications differ.

Texturing

The bulky structure of polyester Gütermann E provides soft edge coverage for overedging light and medium-weight fabrics.

Assess environmental exposure for outdoor seams. Heat-resistant products require a suitable material and complete seam construction.

How to specify a sewing thread

  1. Series and thread number

    Record the complete series designation and No./Tkt. Matching numbers across different series do not alone establish equivalent properties.

  2. Linear density

    Compare the tex or dtex of the exact variant to assess thread size alongside its construction and raw material.

  3. Needle and machine

    Match the technical sheet's needle range to the needle system, machine type, material thickness and point shape.

  4. Material and seam function

    Identify material composition and layers, stitch type, required stretch, friction, washing and environmental exposure.

  5. Sewing trial

    Check tension and stitch length on the production material. Assess puckering, skipped stitches, fibre damage and performance after the intended finishing process.
